Wan Shi Tong MTG: 2 Cards, 8 Proven Uses and the Best Deck Ideas

Wan Shi Tong MTG players will find in the Avatar: The Last Airbender release is not one card but two. The owl spirit who guards the great library in the desert appears as Wan Shi Tong, Librarian in the main Avatar: The Last Airbender set and as Wan Shi Tong, All-Knowing in the companion Eternal-legal product. Both are mono-blue mythic rares, both are legendary Bird Spirits, and they do very different jobs. This guide verifies each card, explains what it does and shows you where it shines.

The two Wan Shi Tong MTG cards at a glance

Magic’s Avatar: The Last Airbender products launched in November 2025. Wizards released a main set, coded TLA, alongside an Eternal-legal collection, coded TLE, made for formats like Commander, Legacy and Vintage. Wan Shi Tong appears in both:

  • Wan Shi Tong, Librarian (TLA): a flexible X-cost flash creature that draws cards and punishes opponents who search their libraries.
  • Wan Shi Tong, All-Knowing (TLE): a five-mana 4/4 flier that tucks a permanent into its owner’s library and makes Spirit tokens whenever cards go into a library.

Because the names are so similar, always check the full card name and set code when you buy a Wan Shi Tong MTG single. Our MTG singles listings show the set and version in the title and photos.

Wan Shi Tong, Librarian: what it does

Wan Shi Tong, Librarian costs X plus two blue mana and is a 1/1 legendary Bird Spirit with flash, flying and vigilance. Its abilities, paraphrased:

  1. Enter trigger: when it enters, it gets X +1/+1 counters, then you draw half X cards, rounded down.
  2. Search punisher: whenever an opponent searches their library, put a +1/+1 counter on Wan Shi Tong and draw a card.

This makes the Librarian the most scalable Wan Shi Tong MTG threat. Cast it for X equals 2 at the end of an opponent’s turn and you get a 3/3 flier and draw a card. Cast it for X equals 6 late in the game and you get a 7/7 flier and draw three. Because it has flash, you can hold up counter-magic and simply cast Wan Shi Tong if your opponent does nothing worth countering.

Why the search trigger matters

Many decks search their libraries all the time: fetch lands, tutors, ramp spells and cards like Cultivate. In Commander especially, opponents who crack fetch lands or tutor for combo pieces will feed your Wan Shi Tong MTG creature a stream of counters and cards. At a typical four-player table, the Librarian can draw several cards per round without you lifting a finger.

Librarian legality

As a main-set Avatar card, Wan Shi Tong, Librarian is legal in Standard, Pioneer, Modern, Legacy, Vintage and Commander at the time of writing (November 2026). It is a strong option for mono-blue or blue-based control decks in constructed formats.

Wan Shi Tong, All-Knowing: what it does

Wan Shi Tong, All-Knowing costs three generic and two blue mana and is a 4/4 legendary Bird Spirit with flying. Its abilities, paraphrased:

  1. Enter trigger: when it enters, the owner of a target nonland permanent puts it into their library either second from the top or on the bottom.
  2. Spirit maker: whenever one or more cards are put into a library from anywhere, create two 1/1 colorless Spirit tokens that can’t block or be blocked by non-Spirit creatures.

The All-Knowing version of Wan Shi Tong MTG fans can play is a removal spell and a token engine in one. Its first ability deals with any nonland permanent, including a problematic commander or planeswalker. Its second ability triggers whenever cards go into any library from outside it, so your own effects, and many of your opponents’, will create Spirits.

An important ruling

The token ability only triggers when cards move into a library from somewhere else, such as the hand, battlefield, graveyard or stack. It does not trigger when you rearrange cards already in a library, so scry and surveil do not count. Keep that in mind when you choose support cards for your Wan Shi Tong MTG deck.

All-Knowing legality

Because it was printed in the Eternal-legal Avatar collection, Wan Shi Tong, All-Knowing is meant for formats like Commander, Legacy and Vintage rather than Standard. Confirm current legality on Scryfall or the official Magic site, since ban lists and legality notes change.

Building a Wan Shi Tong MTG Commander deck

Both Wan Shi Tong MTG versions can lead a mono-blue Commander deck, and each pushes the deck in a different direction. Here is how to think about each one.

Librarian as commander: flash control

A Librarian deck plays at instant speed. You hold up counterspells, cast Wan Shi Tong at the end of an opponent’s turn for a large X and keep drawing cards as the table searches its libraries. Because the commander tax only adds to the fixed cost, you can always recast it with a smaller X if it is removed.

  • Play mana rocks like Sol Ring and Arcane Signet to cast a big X early.
  • Run counterspells and bounce to protect your board.
  • Include cards that make opponents search, such as effects that give them basic lands, to fuel the trigger.
  • Add mana doublers and untappers for huge X turns.

All-Knowing as commander: library manipulation and Spirits

An All-Knowing deck wants as many “put into a library” effects as possible. Each one creates two evasive Spirit tokens that are hard to block. Great support includes:

  • Brainstorm: putting two cards back from your hand triggers Wan Shi Tong.
  • Scroll Rack and Sensei’s Divining Top: repeatable ways to put cards back on top of your library.
  • Spin into Myth and similar tuck spells: removal that also makes Spirits.
  • Memory Lapse and Hinder-style counters: counterspells that put the spell into a library.
  • Spirit synergies: cards that pump or reward Spirits turn the tokens into a real army.

Because the tokens can only be blocked by Spirits, they are effectively unblockable against most decks. A steady stream of them, plus the 4/4 flying commander, adds up quickly.

Budget tips for a Wan Shi Tong MTG deck

A mono-blue deck can be surprisingly affordable. Basic Islands make up most of the mana base, so you can spend your budget on the cards that matter. For a Librarian deck, prioritize cheap counterspells and mana rocks before expensive tutors. For an All-Knowing deck, Brainstorm, Ponder-style cantrips and budget tuck spells come first, with Scroll Rack and Sensei’s Divining Top as later upgrades.

Starter Commander decks are a great source of lands and utility cards, and singles cover the rest. Once your Wan Shi Tong MTG list is working, upgrade one slot at a time rather than buying everything at once. That way you can see which cards actually perform in your playgroup and avoid spending on pieces that sit in your hand.

Cards to pair with both versions

  • Counterspells: Counterspell, Arcane Denial and Swan Song keep threats off the table.
  • Bounce: Cyclonic Rift and cheap bounce spells protect your board.
  • Protection: Swiftfoot Boots and Lightning Greaves guard your commander.
  • Card draw: Rhystic Study-style engines keep your hand full.

8 proven uses for Wan Shi Tong MTG cards

  1. Punish fetch lands: the Librarian draws cards whenever opponents crack fetches.
  2. Punish tutors: combo players who tutor feed your card advantage.
  3. Flash threat: end-of-turn Librarian dodges sorcery-speed removal.
  4. Scalable card draw: big X turns turn the Librarian into a removal magnet that already paid for itself.
  5. Universal removal: the All-Knowing enter trigger handles any nonland permanent.
  6. Token engine: library effects create evasive Spirits.
  7. Combo with tuck effects: every tuck spell becomes removal plus two tokens.
  8. Collection centerpiece: borderless and extended-art versions make great display pieces for Avatar fans.

Wan Shi Tong MTG printings and versions

Both Wan Shi Tong MTG cards have premium versions alongside their regular printings. The Librarian has a main-set version and a borderless version, while the All-Knowing card has an extended-art version among others. Prerelease and other promos may also exist, so check the set symbol, collector number and finish before you buy.

Wan Shi Tong MTG in constructed formats

The Librarian is the version most likely to show up in constructed play, because it is legal in Standard and other main formats. Mono-blue and blue-based control decks appreciate a flash flier that scales with mana and draws cards. Against decks with fetch lands or tutors, it gets even better.

In Legacy and Vintage, fetch lands are everywhere, so the Librarian can draw a surprising number of cards. The All-Knowing version is less common in competitive play but can find a home in control lists that value a five-mana removal spell on a body. As always, check recent results before you invest in a competitive Wan Shi Tong MTG list.

Wan Shi Tong and the Avatar: The Last Airbender story

In the animated series, Wan Shi Tong is the proud spirit who guards a vast library of knowledge and resents humans who use it for war. The cards capture that personality well. The Librarian rewards you when others go searching for knowledge, and the All-Knowing version sends permanents back into the depths of a library, much like the spirit’s library sinking beneath the sand.

Flavor like this makes Wan Shi Tong MTG cards great for themed Commander decks. Pair them with other Avatar spirits and blue characters for a deck that feels like the show. Find more Avatar singles in our shop, and try a mystery box for a surprise addition.

Common mistakes with Wan Shi Tong MTG cards

  • Mixing up the two cards. Librarian and All-Knowing play very differently; buy the one your deck needs.
  • Expecting scry to trigger All-Knowing. It only triggers when cards are put into a library from elsewhere.
  • Casting the Librarian for a tiny X. A 1/1 or 2/2 flier rarely does enough; wait for a meaningful X.
  • Forgetting the search trigger. Watch for opponents’ fetch lands and tutors so you do not miss draws.
  • Ignoring legality. All-Knowing comes from the Eternal-legal collection, so check before bringing it to a Standard event.

Buying Wan Shi Tong MTG online: a practical checklist

Shopping for Wan Shi Tong MTG online is convenient, but a little preparation helps you get exactly what you expect. Use this checklist every time you buy Magic: The Gathering products, whether you are picking up a single card, a sealed box or a premium collection.

Before you order

  • Confirm the exact product. Check the set name, card number, language and finish in the listing title and photos.
  • Read the condition. Singles are usually listed as Near Mint, Lightly Played or similar. Graded cards show the grading company and grade.
  • Check stock status. In-stock items ship sooner than pre-orders, which ship when the product releases.
  • Compare value, not just price. A bundle with sleeves, dice or promos may be better value than packs alone.
  • Know the policies. Read the shipping, returns and contact information before checkout.

When your order arrives

  • Open the parcel carefully and check that everything matches the order.
  • Inspect singles and slabs under good light straight away.
  • Sleeve and store cards immediately so they keep their condition.
  • Contact the store quickly if anything is wrong, with photos of the item and packaging.

How to store and care for Wan Shi Tong MTG

Good storage protects both the look and the value of Wan Shi Tong MTG. Cards are made of layered paper and ink, so heat, light, moisture and pressure all cause damage over time. A few simple habits make a big difference.

  1. Sleeve first. A soft penny sleeve stops scratches and fingerprints.
  2. Add rigid protection. Toploaders or semi-rigid holders stop bends for valuable cards.
  3. Choose the right binder. Side-loading, acid-free binders keep cards secure and easy to view. Avoid ring binders that press into cards.
  4. Control the environment. Keep cards in a cool, dry room away from windows, radiators and damp basements.
  5. Store sealed product flat. Boxes and tins last longer stored flat and out of direct light.
  6. Handle with clean, dry hands. Oils and moisture can mark card surfaces.

You can find sleeves, toploaders, binders and deck boxes in our TCG accessories range.

Common mistakes to avoid with Wan Shi Tong MTG

Even experienced collectors make avoidable mistakes. Keeping these in mind will save you money and protect your cards.

  • Chasing one card through endless packs. If you need a specific card, the single is almost always the cheaper route.
  • Skipping protection. A card left unsleeved for a day can pick up a scratch that lowers its value.
  • Buying on hype alone. Prices can move quickly after a release. Check several recent sales before paying a premium.
  • Ignoring condition notes. Two copies of the same card can differ greatly in value because of wear.
  • Storing cards in the wrong place. Attics, garages and sunny windowsills are hard on cardboard.
  • Forgetting your goal. A clear plan, such as finishing a set or upgrading a deck, keeps spending focused.

A simple plan to get started with Wan Shi Tong MTG

  1. Set a goal. Decide whether you are collecting, playing or both.
  2. Set a monthly budget. Spending a fixed amount keeps the hobby fun and sustainable.
  3. Mix sealed and singles. Open packs for enjoyment and buy singles for the cards you really need.
  4. Protect as you go. Sleeves and toploaders cost little compared with the cards they protect.
  5. Track your collection. A simple list shows what you own and what you still want.
  6. Sell or trade duplicates. Turn cards you do not need into new additions through a trusted store.
