Vivi MTG: 10 Best Commander Picks for the Brilliant Black Mage
Vivi MTG fans have been waiting for since the Final Fantasy crossover was announced arrived as Vivi Ornitier, a three-mana blue-red Wizard that turned into one of the most talked-about cards of 2025. The little black mage from Final Fantasy IX ramps, grows and burns every opponent each time you cast a noncreature spell. This guide covers what the card does, why it was banned in Standard, how to build a Vivi Commander deck and which printings collectors chase.

What Vivi MTG players get: Vivi Ornitier explained
Vivi Ornitier costs one generic plus one blue and one red mana. It is a legendary Wizard creature with 0 power and 3 toughness, printed at mythic rare in the Final Fantasy set released in June 2025. It has two abilities, paraphrased here:
- Mana ability: for zero mana, add X mana in any combination of blue and red, where X is Vivi’s power. You can only use this during your turn and only once each turn.
- Spell trigger: whenever you cast a noncreature spell, put a +1/+1 counter on Vivi and Vivi deals 1 damage to each opponent.
Put together, the card snowballs. Each instant, sorcery, artifact or enchantment you cast makes Vivi bigger, and a bigger Vivi produces more mana to cast more spells. A Vivi MTG turn that starts with a few cheap cantrips can end with a 5/8 creature, several points of damage to every opponent and a pile of mana left over.
Important rulings
- The mana ability does not use the stack, so opponents cannot respond to it.
- The spell trigger resolves before the spell that caused it. Even if the spell is countered, Vivi still gets the counter and still deals the damage.
- The mana ability counts Vivi’s current power when you activate it, so cast your cheap spells first and tap Vivi for mana later in the turn.
Vivi MTG format legality and the Standard ban
Vivi Ornitier was so strong in Standard Izzet spell decks that Wizards of the Coast banned it in Standard in the November 10, 2025 Banned and Restricted announcement, alongside Proft’s Eidetic Memory and Screaming Nemesis. At the time of writing (November 2026), Vivi remains banned in Standard.
The card is still legal in Pioneer, Modern, Legacy, Vintage and Commander at the time of writing. Bans can change at any announcement, so check the current list on the official Magic: The Gathering site or Scryfall before you register a Vivi MTG deck for an event.
Why Vivi was too strong for Standard
In a format with lots of cheap instants and sorceries, Vivi came down on turn three and immediately threatened to take over. Opponents had to answer it on sight, and if they could not, the damage to each opponent plus the extra mana created a fast clock. That combination of ramp, growth and reach in one three-drop is exactly what made it so oppressive.

Building a Vivi MTG Commander deck
In Commander, Vivi is a spellslinger dream. The damage hits every opponent, the mana scales with your spell count and the commander tax is low because Vivi costs only three. A Vivi MTG deck wants a high density of cheap noncreature spells, a few big payoffs and enough protection to keep its commander on the board.
The core plan
- Cast Vivi on turn two or three. Mana rocks such as Sol Ring and Arcane Signet help.
- Chain cheap spells. Cantrips like Brainstorm, Ponder and Preordain grow Vivi while digging for payoffs.
- Tap Vivi for mana late in the turn. Cast your spells first, then use the bigger mana output.
- Finish with burn or storm. The ping to each opponent adds up, and a big X spell or storm payoff ends the game.
Vivi MTG in cEDH
Vivi Ornitier quickly became a popular competitive Commander pick. Free and cheap spells, fast mana and tutors let skilled pilots win in a single big turn. These lists are tight and expensive, but even a lower-budget version plays the same explosive game.
Vivi MTG for casual tables
For a casual or mid-power Vivi MTG build, focus on fun spells rather than combos. Copy effects, token makers that trigger off noncreature spells and big flashy sorceries all feel great with Vivi. If your group uses Commander brackets, count your Game Changers and tutors and keep the deck in the right bracket.
A sample Vivi MTG turn, step by step
Seeing a turn play out makes the card click. Imagine it is your fourth turn in Commander. Vivi is on the battlefield with no counters, you have four lands, and your hand holds Brainstorm, Ponder, Manamorphose and a three-mana sorcery.
- Cast Manamorphose using two lands. It gives the mana back and draws a card. Vivi becomes 1/4 and each opponent takes 1.
- Cast Ponder for one mana. Vivi becomes 2/5 and each opponent takes another point.
- Cast Brainstorm for one mana. Vivi becomes 3/6, opponents take a third point, and you set up your next draws.
- Tap Vivi for three mana in blue and red, add your two untapped lands, and cast the sorcery with mana to spare. Vivi becomes 4/7.
In one turn you drew several cards, dealt 4 damage to every opponent and finished with a 4/7 commander, all without spending a card on ramp. That is why a Vivi MTG deck feels so different from other blue-red lists: the commander is your mana source, your threat and your damage engine at the same time.
Sample Vivi MTG Commander deck structure
Every playgroup is different, but a balanced 99 for Vivi often looks something like this. Treat it as a starting point and adjust to your bracket and budget.
- About 33 to 36 lands, fewer in a list with many mana rocks and free spells.
- 8 to 10 mana rocks and rituals, including Sol Ring, Arcane Signet and cheap blue-red signets.
- 15 to 20 cantrips and card draw spells that cost one or two mana.
- 8 to 10 interaction spells, mostly cheap counterspells and burn.
- 5 to 8 payoffs, such as storm finishers, copy effects and big X spells.
- A handful of protection pieces to keep Vivi alive.
- Very few creatures, since creature spells do not trigger Vivi.
This shape keeps the Vivi MTG engine running: plenty of cheap triggers, enough interaction to survive and a clear way to close out the game once the commander is large.
10 best cards for Vivi MTG decks
Here are ten cards that consistently perform well alongside Vivi Ornitier. They cover cheap spells, doublers and finishers.
- Brainstorm: a one-mana instant that grows Vivi and fixes your draws.
- Manamorphose: effectively free, replaces itself and triggers Vivi.
- Mishra’s Bauble: a zero-cost artifact that counts as a noncreature spell.
- Lotus Petal: another free trigger that also adds mana.
- Harmonic Prodigy: it makes triggered abilities of Wizards trigger an additional time, and Vivi is a Wizard, so every spell doubles the counters and the damage.
- Thousand-Year Storm: copies your instants and sorceries for a huge turn.
- Grapeshot: a classic storm finisher that pairs perfectly with a spell chain.
- Aetherflux Reservoir: a colorless artifact that rewards casting many spells in one turn.
- Swiftfoot Boots: cheap protection that keeps Vivi safe from targeted removal.
- Past in Flames: recasts your graveyard of instants and sorceries for a second wave.
Many of these are staples you will use in several decks. Find them among our MTG singles, and look at our collections if you want a bulk start on a spell-heavy deck.

Vivi MTG printings and versions
Vivi Ornitier appears in several treatments in the Final Fantasy set, which makes it a fun card to collect. The main versions you will see are:
- Main set version (number 248): the standard frame, found in Play and Collector Boosters.
- Borderless character art (number 321): artwork by Toshiyuki Itahana, an artist closely tied to Final Fantasy IX.
- Additional alternate versions (numbers 514 and 570): further alternate-art printings with different artwork and finishes.
- Promo version (248s): a foil promo printing of the main card.
Foil and non-foil copies exist for most treatments, and prices differ widely between them. When buying, check the collector number and finish in the photos so you get exactly the version you want. Final Fantasy booster boxes and Collector Boosters remain a popular way to chase every Vivi version; see our booster boxes for sealed options.
Collecting tips for Vivi

Vivi MTG in Pioneer, Modern and Legacy
Outside Standard and Commander, Vivi has appeared in Izzet spell decks in older formats. In Pioneer, it plays a similar role to its Standard days, growing quickly off cheap spells. In Modern and Legacy, the competition is tougher and removal is cheaper, but the card’s ability to punish opponents who do not answer it keeps it on the radar.
Metagames change quickly, so check recent tournament results before investing in a competitive Vivi MTG deck for a nonrotating format. What matters most is a high count of cheap noncreature spells and a plan to protect your three-drop.

Common mistakes with Vivi MTG
- Tapping Vivi for mana too early. Wait until Vivi has grown from your spells, because the ability can only be used once per turn.
- Playing too many creatures. Creature spells do not trigger Vivi. Keep the count low.
- Forgetting it works on your turn only. The mana ability cannot be used on an opponent’s turn, so plan instant-speed plays accordingly.
- Ignoring protection. Vivi has only 3 toughness. Protect it or expect it to be removed.
- Not tracking damage. Each spell pings every opponent. Keep count, because the damage adds up faster than you think.

- Read the condition. Singles are usually listed as Near Mint, Lightly Played or similar. Graded cards show the grading company and grade.
- Check stock status. In-stock items ship sooner than pre-orders, which ship when the product releases.
- Compare value, not just price. A bundle with sleeves, dice or promos may be better value than packs alone.
- Know the policies. Read the shipping, returns and contact information before checkout.
When your order arrives
- Open the parcel carefully and check that everything matches the order.
- Inspect singles and slabs under good light straight away.
- Sleeve and store cards immediately so they keep their condition.
- Contact the store quickly if anything is wrong, with photos of the item and packaging.
How to store and care for Vivi MTG
Good storage protects both the look and the value of Vivi MTG. Cards are made of layered paper and ink, so heat, light, moisture and pressure all cause damage over time. A few simple habits make a big difference.
- Sleeve first. A soft penny sleeve stops scratches and fingerprints.
- Add rigid protection. Toploaders or semi-rigid holders stop bends for valuable cards.
- Choose the right binder. Side-loading, acid-free binders keep cards secure and easy to view. Avoid ring binders that press into cards.
- Control the environment. Keep cards in a cool, dry room away from windows, radiators and damp basements.
- Store sealed product flat. Boxes and tins last longer stored flat and out of direct light.
- Handle with clean, dry hands. Oils and moisture can mark card surfaces.
You can find sleeves, toploaders, binders and deck boxes in our TCG accessories range.

Common mistakes to avoid with Vivi MTG
Even experienced collectors make avoidable mistakes. Keeping these in mind will save you money and protect your cards.
- Chasing one card through endless packs. If you need a specific card, the single is almost always the cheaper route.
- Skipping protection. A card left unsleeved for a day can pick up a scratch that lowers its value.
- Buying on hype alone. Prices can move quickly after a release. Check several recent sales before paying a premium.
- Ignoring condition notes. Two copies of the same card can differ greatly in value because of wear.
- Storing cards in the wrong place. Attics, garages and sunny windowsills are hard on cardboard.
- Forgetting your goal. A clear plan, such as finishing a set or upgrading a deck, keeps spending focused.
