What affects the offer when you sell Pokémon cards

Condition is the biggest factor. Cards with sharp corners, clean edges and no scratches are worth more than played copies. Demand matters too: cards that are popular in the current competitive format, or chase cards from new sets, attract stronger offers. Sealed product should be unopened with intact shrink wrap. For graded slabs, the grade and the grading company make a big difference.

We look at recent sales and our own stock levels when we make an offer, and we explain the price if you ask. There is no obligation to accept, and you can decide between cash and store credit after you see the numbers.

The complete guide to selling Pokémon cards

Deciding to sell Pokémon cards can feel overwhelming, especially if you have a large collection. This guide walks you through the process step by step: how to sort your cards, how condition and demand affect value, the difference between cash and store credit, and how to get the best result when you sell Pokémon cards to TCG Store USA.

Step 1: sort your collection

Start by separating your cards into groups: graded slabs, sealed product, valuable raw cards and bulk. Within each group, sort by set. Most sets print a set symbol and card number on every card, which makes it easy to group them. Sorting first saves time and helps you see quickly which cards are worth listing individually.

Step 2: identify your valuable cards

Not every card in a collection has significant value. Look for holofoil cards, full arts, illustration rares, secret rares (card numbers above the set total), ex, V, VMAX and GX cards, and older vintage cards. Popular characters such as Charizard, Pikachu, Umbreon and Mewtwo often carry higher values. When you sell Pokémon cards, these are the cards to list one by one.

Step 3: assess condition honestly

Condition has the biggest effect on value. Examine each card under good light, front and back. Look at the corners, edges and surface for whitening, scratches, dents or creases. Use simple terms: Near Mint for cards that look fresh from the pack, Lightly Played for minor wear, Moderately Played for more visible wear, and Damaged for creases or heavy marks. Honest condition notes help us give you an accurate offer the first time.

What affects the price when you sell Pokémon cards

  • Condition: clean cards with sharp corners are worth more than played copies.
  • Demand: cards that are popular with collectors or competitive players attract stronger offers.
  • Rarity: secret rares, special illustration rares and promos are usually worth more.
  • Language: Japanese and English cards can have different values.
  • Grading: for slabs, the grading company and grade make a big difference.
  • Quantity: larger collections can be easier to make a combined offer on.

Cash or store credit?

When you sell Pokémon cards to us, you can choose cash or store credit. Cash is paid after we receive and check your cards. Store credit lets you trade directly into new singles, sealed product or graded cards from our shop. If you plan to keep collecting, store credit is a convenient way to turn cards you no longer need into the cards you actually want. You can tell us your preference on the sell list form, or decide after you see the offer.

Selling sealed product

Sealed booster boxes, Elite Trainer Boxes, collections and tins are popular with collectors. Sealed product should be unopened with intact factory wrap. Note any damage to the packaging, such as dents or torn wrap, in your list. Older sealed product from discontinued sets can be especially sought after.

Selling graded cards

For graded slabs, include the grading company, the grade and the certificate number for each card. Check that the slab itself is intact, with no cracks. You can verify any PSA slab on the PSA certificate verification page before you send your list.

Selling Magic: The Gathering and One Piece cards

We also buy Magic: The Gathering singles and sealed product, as well as One Piece Card Game cards. For Magic singles, include the card name, set code and finish, such as foil, borderless or extended art. For One Piece cards, include the set code and rarity. You can sell Pokémon cards, Magic cards and One Piece cards together in a single list.

How to send a great sell list

A clear list helps us give you an accurate offer quickly. Use one line per card or product, and include:

  1. The card or product name.
  2. The set and card number.
  3. The condition, or the grading company and grade for slabs.
  4. The quantity, if you have more than one copy.

For large collections, send a summary of your most valuable cards and sealed items first, along with a rough count of bulk cards. We will reply with next steps.

Shipping your cards safely

Once you accept an offer, pack your cards carefully. Put each valuable card in a penny sleeve and a toploader or team bag, and tape the toploaders closed so cards cannot slide out. Pack everything tightly in a sturdy box with padding so nothing moves in transit. Keep sealed product in its original wrap and protect corners with extra padding. Use a tracked shipping service so you can follow your package.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Sending cards loose in an envelope without sleeves or rigid protection.
  • Overestimating condition, which can lead to a lower final offer after inspection.
  • Leaving out set names or card numbers, which slows down the offer.
  • Cleaning cards or slabs with chemicals, which can cause damage.

Rarity symbols explained

Before you sell Pokémon cards, it helps to read the rarity symbol in the bottom corner of each card. A circle means common, a diamond means uncommon and a star means rare. Modern sets add more rarity levels: double rares, ultra rares, illustration rares, special illustration rares and hyper rares, often shown with multiple or coloured stars. Higher rarities are printed less often and usually carry more value.

Card numbers and secret rares

Each card shows a number such as 045/191. When the first number is higher than the second, for example 228/193, the card is a secret rare. These are some of the most valuable cards in any set, so check your collection for them carefully before you sell Pokémon cards.

Eras of Pokémon cards

Pokémon cards have been printed for decades, and each era has its own collectors. Vintage cards from the earliest sets are prized for nostalgia, especially first edition and shadowless printings. Cards from the EX, Diamond and Pearl, and HeartGold SoulSilver eras are popular with collectors who grew up with them. Modern Scarlet and Violet and Mega Evolution cards are in high demand for their illustration rares and special artwork. Whatever era your cards come from, list the set name so we can value them correctly.

Should you grade before you sell?

Grading can increase the value of a card in excellent condition, but it costs money and takes time. It usually makes sense for valuable cards that look close to perfect. For most cards, selling raw is simpler and faster. If you are unsure, send us your list and mention the cards you think might grade well; we can talk through the options when we reply.

What graders look for

  • Centering: how evenly the borders frame the artwork.
  • Corners: sharp, square corners without whitening.
  • Edges: clean edges without chipping.
  • Surface: no scratches, print lines, dents or marks.

Selling collections and bulk

If you want to sell Pokémon cards in bulk, start by pulling out anything rare, holo or graded, then count the remaining commons and uncommons by set. A short summary, such as roughly how many cards and which sets they come from, is enough for a first message. We will reply with the next steps for your collection.

Inherited or older collections

Many people decide to sell Pokémon cards after finding an old collection. If you are not sure what you have, take a few clear photos of the most interesting cards and the set symbols, and send them with a short description. We can help you work out where to start.

A glossary for sellers

  • Raw: a card that has not been graded.
  • Slab: a card graded and sealed in a protective case.
  • NM, LP, MP: Near Mint, Lightly Played and Moderately Played condition.
  • Holo: a card with a holographic picture.
  • Bulk: common and uncommon cards without significant individual value.
  • Store credit: a balance you can spend in our shop instead of taking cash.

Trading up your collection

Many collectors sell Pokémon cards they have outgrown to fund the cards they want next. Choosing store credit lets you trade straight into new singles, sealed booster boxes or graded slabs from our shop. It is a simple way to keep your collection focused on the cards you love most.

Ready to start?

The easiest way to sell Pokémon cards to TCG Store USA is the sell list form at the top of this page. Add your name, email and your list, tell us whether you prefer cash or store credit, and send it. If you have questions first, call +1 (443) 514-5708 or email sales@tcgstoreusa.com.

How we review your list

When your sell list arrives, we check each card or product against current demand and our own stock levels. Cards that are in high demand, or that we do not currently have in stock, usually attract the strongest offers. We then reply by email with an offer and, where helpful, notes on specific cards. If your list includes items we are not able to buy at the moment, we will let you know so you can decide what to do with them.

After you accept

Once you accept an offer, we confirm the next steps by email, including how to send your cards. When your package arrives, we check the cards against your list. If everything matches, we complete payment in cash or store credit as agreed. If the condition of a card is different from the list, we will explain the difference and confirm any change with you before going ahead.

Taking helpful photos

Photos are especially useful for high-value cards, graded slabs and sealed product. Use natural light and a plain background. Photograph the front and back of each card, with close-ups of any corners or edges that show wear. For slabs, include the label so the grade and certificate number are visible. For sealed product, show all sides of the packaging and any damage to the wrap. Clear photos help us give you a confident offer without delays.

Timing your sale

Card values move with demand. Interest in a set often peaks around its release and again when a card becomes popular in competitive play or with collectors. You do not need to time the market perfectly, but if you are deciding between selling now or later, think about whether new reprints, upcoming sets or tournament results might affect the cards on your list. If you are unsure, send your list and we can tell you what we would offer today.

Keep your own records

Before you send anything, keep a copy of your list and your photos. It is a good habit for any sale and makes it easy to check everything matches when we confirm your order.

Sell Pokémon cards the simple way

You do not need to be an expert to sell Pokémon cards to us. Many people who sell Pokémon cards are clearing out a childhood collection or trading up to new sets. Whatever your reason, the steps are the same: send your list, get an offer and choose cash or store credit. If you want to sell Pokémon cards today, the form at the top of this page is the place to start.
